Kittens, kittens, kittens!!!

June 18th
Since our last post, we’ve been completely inundated with calls from people needing us to take in heavily pregnant strays or new-born, abandoned kittens.
Recently, we’ve been caring for the following in our dedicated Mother & Baby Unit;
Iris & Maia – 2 beautiful babies found abandoned in a box, doing well but currently being treated for a suspected Ringworm infection.
Josie – a very pregnant mum when she arrived who then had 5 babies all of which have been successfully rehomed, apart from baby Twiglet who underwent life-saving surgery – more on that later!
Domino – brought in heavily pregnant and soon gave birth to 5 kittens all with Fever Coat, a fairly rare condition but Ludo, Scrabble, Ace, Chess & Solitaire are all now doing well.
Tinkerbelle – found heavily pregnant & gave birth to lovely Cosmo, Silas, Cornelius, Oberon & Titania, all doing well.
Audrey – gave birth to 3 boys living outside as a stray, then brought into us, named Cary, Harrison and Morgan.
Ophelia – has 4 beautiful kittens called Ariel, Othello, Cordelia and Antonio.
When cats are left unneutered, very young females can end up pregnant again and again, putting their health at risk and resulting in kittens being born as strays, often with infections and life-threatening conditions.
With quick action and lots of care, medication and sometimes surgery, these cats often survive and are eventually successfully rehomed with a loving family. But it doesn’t always work out that way.
Recently, a lovely cat named Storm came in heavily pregnant, suffering from a virus. She gave birth to four kittens. Devastatingly, one-by-one the kittens all became poorly and only Baby Sora survived – heartbreaking. Mum Storm and her last remaining kitten Sora are currently recovering from their traumatic experience and undergoing further tests to determine the full extent of their treatment needs.
The pens are full to bursting but the calls don’t stop coming which is why it’s so important to neuter and spay at the earliest opportunity, to help reduce the unnecessary suffering of so many innocent cats and kittens.
Baby Twiglet continues to do well in the very safe and loving hands of our foster carer, Zoe. The initial cast for his ribs has now been removed, and the vet team were really happy with how everything looked which means he may not need further surgeries – he will be closely monitored over the next month so time will tell. Due to the extent of his vet treatments, we launched a fundraiser on social media which lots of our supporters donated to showing just how much love there is for cats and kittens – really encouraging and extremely heartwarming. Thanks to everyone who continues to support our work.
In other news, our fundraising efforts continue, with our regular Jumble & Bake Sales at St Paul’s Church Hall, as well as the Charity Shop which continues to be busy since the refurbishment last year. Shopping second hand is still a growing retail trend, both for the good it does for the environment and for the joy of finding a pre-loved bargain. The generous donations of clothes, toys, shoes and household goods from our local community keep the shop team very busy and we’re hugely grateful.
We also want to do a little shout out to the team at Richer Sounds in Stockport who answered our call for a donation of a tv monitor and wall mount. They didn’t hesitate to help us out, several of them have cats themselves and couldn’t wait to get involved! The tv screen is now pride of place in the shop with lots of information about the charity, what we do and how you can help so keep an eye out for it next time you pop in!
Don’t forget, if you’re interested in adopting a cat or kitten, make sure you’re following our dedicated Heaton’s Cats Adoption Page on Facebook (separate to our main FB page), which is where you’ll be the first to hear when they become available for adoption.
All applications for adoptions need to be submitted via the form here on our website. Please make sure you’ve read the Adoption Policy before applying.
